Stephen will talk about how inequalities can be drivers of poor mental health in some communities and how different communities access treatment and support in different ways. He will look at provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983, the legislation that allows for compulsory detention and treatment of people assessed to have mental disorders, examining whether the legislation itself opens the door for unconscious biases or negative stereotyping that might lead to the disparate outcomes that some BAME communities experience in the mental health system. He will also look at the proposals in the recent Independent Review of the Mental Health Act to address these inequalities.

A portable hearing loop is available.  Please let us know if you are considering attending and wish to make use of this facility - or if you require some other adjustment.

These meetings are free for members.  Non-members are welcome, though they are asked to pay £20 (or to join!).
