“Covid-19 has exposed and deepened the inequalities that already exist in the UK.” David Lammy MP tweeted on 11 May 2020.

This Discrimination Law Association webinar examines the unequal response to the Covid-19 pandemic applied to BAME people and discusses this treatment alongside, and through the lens of, the mass civil action of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

Indicative of longstanding institutional racism is the fact that black people have experienced a disproportionate number of fines over lockdown breaches. Further, to overcome the criminal court backlog some wrongly attribute to Covid and /or the BLM protests, discussions of “‘fast track’ prosecutions” and the suspension of the right to trial by jury in certain instances will likely further have a disproportionate impact on BAME people. With this current backdrop, the webinar will pragmatically discuss the coronavirus regulations and the right to protest.

Our speakers have agreed to take questions in advance which will be discussed at the session.  Please submit questions to the DLA administrator ([email protected]) by 5:00pm on Wednesday 15 July.

This meeting is free for members.
